Blue Moon Inuksuit

If you look carefully on the horizon you can see a small inukshuk (pl. inuksuit). This one is a small stone marker created in the shape of a window for hunters or travelers on the land to look through.  Inuit use these to point the way to important hunting or fishing locations or to show the way home.

This is the inukshuk in front of our camp.  The ones that you see with arms and legs are a relatively new creation, but they have come to symbolize the north.

Digging Tent Rings

We're in the homestretch now, working on a few final Pre-Dorset tent rings at 50 metres above sea level, before heading down to the shoreline to work on some more recent rings.

Heading into the field at the start of the year, I know the season is near when I find dairy products in stores with expiry dates after I leave home.

At the end of the year, its seeing long term weather forecasts that start to list dates after I head home that remind me that its time to savour every moment in the field before they are gone for another year.

High Side Notches

This is the base of a broken biface from a Pre-Dorset site.  I'm holding it right side up in the photo - the broken tip would have refit on the top of the biface.   It most likely functioned as an harpoon endblade or lance head.  I find it interesting for the very high side notches.  The part of the base below the side notches is usually only a few millimetres tall, but on this one its almost 2 cm.

The same base in situ next to a flake

This is a similar high notched endblade from another site a couple hundred metres away. This one was found point down sticking out of the ground.

Arctic Fox

For an animal that I'm really not that fond of, I seem to have an awful lot of fox photos.

Polar Bears

We had some visitors drop by for breakfast on Sunday morning.

We sounded the air horn and sent them towards the beach, but they came back to inspect the spot where the bear monitor stands gaurd.  The post in the picture smells like people.

They came by sea and left by sea ...at least we hope they are gone.

Digging

A Pre-Dorset tent ring in the foreground with assorted test units and excavation blocks across the site. I'm enjoying using my monopod for high angle shots this summer.

Squirrel
In the south, squirrels steal seeds. In the North, ermines steal your char.
