Backfilling

The final step before we leave a site and move to the next one, is backfilling.  We pull up the grid pins and strings and all the soil and moss that we removed during the excavation gets tossed back into the holes.

  1. You lucky dogs - that process can be a 2 day affair with a backdirt pile that never seems to get any smaller. Thin paleoarctic sites are more my style!!!!

  2. Yeah - we're lucky with shallow sites here. We can pretty much see the whole layout of the site before we start digging (ie. number and location of all the tent rings and associated features) and then we only have to scrape through a bit of moss and thin soil to fully excavate them. Backfilling a whole house might only take 10-15 minutes.
