Apparently, it wasn't just my uncle Otto that Erwin showed the rifle to, but my dad as well. Grandpa had hid the gun in a rock pile in the community pasture. Erwin tried to modify the gun into a pistol by cutting off the butt and the barrel. He must have done something to the mechanism as well, because he was nervous enough about firing it that he didn't want to be holding it when he pulled the trigger. My dad went with him on the day he tried firing the gun. Erwin tied the gun to a fencepost in the community pasture with a long string around the trigger. He unravelled the string so that it was long enough that he could hide behind another post in the fence and pull the string to squeeze the trigger. But when he yanked the string, nothing happened. He must have damaged the gun enough that it no longer fired. Sometime after that he hid all the butchered pieces of the .22 and no one ever told grandpa what happened.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11473674521424237610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086026991280831425.post-53009236286139143402009-11-12T13:31:37.828-03:302009-11-12T13:31:37.828-03:30Your story was haunting and like so many others, h...Your story was haunting and like so many others, heartbreaking...how lucky we are that those before us gave us the gift of freedom at such a high cost to themselves...I also posted a verse which I wrote to remember everyone who suffered because of oppression and war.Kerry O'Gormanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14951445594586971908noreply@blogger.com
